After years of Whole Foods envy, a store finally opened near my home. Now all of those out of town trips where I would visit a Whole Foods have ended. I can get in my car and within 10 minutes be in my own store!

As a new mother, I hit the panic button on exposing my new infant to chemicals and weird processed foods. Whole Foods has come to the rescue. In addition to the baby foods and products they offer in their store, they also offer an online resource called "Whole Baby."

A few months ago we introduced you to Serena & Lily.

Serena & Lily is a children's line and they are located in children's stores all over the United States and Canada.

A chance meeting on an October day in 2003 seemed rather serendipitous at the time: Serena Dugan, a textile designer and artist, met Lily Kanter, a baby boutique owner and savvy businesswoman. Perhaps it was our differences that brought us together – our skills and backgrounds were opposite one another in that advantageous, yin-yang kind of way. Or maybe it was our striking similarities despite these differences – the collision of two go-getter Type-A scatterbrains.

In retrospect, it wasn’t simply the advantageous fit of designer with businesswoman that made sparks fly that day – it was our shared aesthetic and shared vision of the baby’s room reinvented. Children’s spaces that are fresh and style-driven, with dynamic color and pattern combination, timeless and comfortable through sophistication and simplicity…this is what we both dreamed of.

Our first collections were released 8 months later: 14 bedding sets, 30 original fabric patterns, and a look for the nursery that turned the industry on its side. As we continue to add to the line and expand into children’s furnishings, we bring the same passion, gusto, and nonsensical drive that brought our first collection to market. As our products evolve, our design values stay the same: to maintain a sense of integrity and a visual standard that is authentic and original in a sea of copycats.

At the end of a long and hectic day, we ask ourselves what continues to drive us. The answer is simple – far beyond our love of great design, we care about making a difference in the world. We are doing that through ‘Serena & Lily.’ Through a portion of product sales, we give back to the world that our children will inherit. These are the fundamental values that guide us, and the conviction that fuels the growth of our business.

Creative Kids at Home

Each week they offer different crafts and ideas to do with your children at home!

A Savvy Baby Especially Like This One!

This is great for when you are in the kitchen and you have to keep the small & big kids occupied!

Colors and Bubbles

Materials:

dish detergent

food coloring

flat container (white or clear is best)

straws

oil (optional)

Instructions:

Find a container with a large, flat bottom. A glass, oblong baking dish works great.

Squirt some dish detergent in the bottom of the pan in some sort of zig zag or S figure. About a teaspoon is plenty.

Let the children put a few drops of food coloring in the bottom of the dish.

Add a teaspoon of water.

Use the straw to blow bubbles and move the food coloring around.

After this first creation, wash the dish, and start again with about a cup of water in the bottom. Then add the dish detergent and about the same amount of oil. Add drops of food coloring and see what happens.

Hints:

Start with two colors or it will turn muddy fairly quickly.

Adding the water makes it easier to blow the bubbles.

Use the straw to move the food coloring to blend and create colors. The children can experiment to learn that red and yellow make orange.

Use drops of oil to add a different look to the creation. Oil and water don't mix, separating the colors.

Food coloring won't dissolve in oil, so it can create a barrier between different sections of color.

Use a spoon to draw lines and patterns in the color.

When your child is all done, just take it over the to the sink to wash up. The soap is already in the mixture so it washes up easily.

Monkey Munch

9 cups chex cereal

1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup peanut butter

1/4 cup butter

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 1/2 cup powdered sugar

-place chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter in microwaveable bowl.

-melt in microwave for 1 minute and then stir. continue microwaving for 30 second intervals until melted.

-add vanilla and stir.

-pour melted mixture over cereal while stirring.

-put mixture in zip lock bag.

-add powdered sugar and shake until mixture is coated.

Tip #1 Organize

As a mother of sextuplets and twins, one of the best methods for keeping a family organized is lists! No one has the memory of an elephant! Keep a constant running list of "To Dos" and then cross things off as they are completed! My to-do lists consists of meals for the week, which loads of laundry need to be done, and which parts of the house needs attention. Lists will keep you and your family organized.

Tip #2 Shop on a Budget

Shopping for a family of 10 means planning ahead and staying on a budget. The good news is that you can have healthy, home cooked delicious (even organic!) meals for a large family. Look for sales! Watch the sale papers and take advantage of store promotions, coupons and rainchecks. Keep a constant running list of things that are on sale and that you need at the store from week to week. This will avoid buying things that you don't need. It's also good to stock up on items that you use a lot of and that are on sale!

Tip #3 Prepare for Outings

Plan ahead! If outings are well thought out in advance, it will allow for a better time for all! Always take plenty of drinks, snacks, clothing and supplies. Make a mental plan of how the day will unfold and then adjust it as necessary!

Tip #4 Count Your Blessings

On days that your role as mom seems mundane and pointless and repetitive(we all have those), remember to count your blessings! Take a moment, see all that is positive in your life and the life of your children and it will give you that boost that you need!

Tip #5 Promote Safety

Talk about different scenarios and what is safe and acceptable and what is not safe and what they should not do in different situations! Remind them to come to YOU as a parent if they hear something that they don't understand, think that is bad or don't know what it means. You want to position yourself as their resource person to keep conversation lines open. This needs to start at a very young age.

Tip #6 Provide Order

A schedule will help everyone in the family. It removes the guesswork and a lot of frustration. It allows the things that need to get done to get done because life becomes somewhat predictable.

Tip #7 Reward Your Children

Reward them for their helpfulness and kindness—if only with your words, this will mean a lot to them. They want your approval!

Tip #8 Make Housework a Family Affair

Especially in a large family, involving all of the kids in the housework, chores, cooking, cleaning etc. This helps to provide family unity, and a sense of belonging. It also teaches kids to develop a strong work ethic. And encourage Dad to get involved—n our situation,much of what a successful mom is able to accomplish, is due to a very present and helpful dad!

First of all, my name is Amy and I am a mother of 4 beautiful children, ranging from the ages of 4 months to 5 years. Yes, I have my hands full! But, I am enjoying every minute of it!

To add to the chaos, I have my own graphic

design business,

which I started back in 2005. Over the past few years I basically just

started playing around on the computer and discovered that it was

something that I was actually good at….and

enjoyed doing! When I was pregnant with my second child, I expanded my knowledge and went back to school. It was all online which was great. You can imagine the craziness with already having one child and another one on the way. I finished the program successfully and then decided it was worth a shot to open my own business. I guess it was a good idea because people actually hired me and my business was doing great. It has continued to be successful even in the midst of adding two more babies to our family.

I hope you’ll to take a look at my website. I also have a brand new Blog. I’ve done everything from logos to baby announcements and continue to stay plenty busy. Sometimes it’s hard to manage babies and business but we make it work. Naptime is wonderful and something I look forward to everyday!!

Summer Reading Program

One of our favorite summer activities is the summer reading programs offered through our local library and Barnes and Noble. Both are free and a great way to keep kids reading through the summer.

The reading program through Barnes and Noble is for grades 1-6th. This year's theme is based on books by the popular children's author, Andrew Clements. All your children have to do is read 8 books, take their reading log to the store, and they can chose a free book from the list of paperback titles.

Recycled Chunky Crayons

One of our favorite sites is Make and Takes. It is full of fun craft ideas, recipes, and loads of fun things to do with your little ones. One of our favorite projects is the Recycled Chunky Crayons. It is a great way to transform all of your broken crayons into something new and exciting. Here is a step-by-step tutorial on how to turn your broken unused crayons into something new.

Recycled Chunky Crayons:

Get out your old crayons. Take off the paper (if it is still on) and break them up into smaller pieces (kids love to help with this.)

Spray your muffin tin (below is a mini muffin tin) with vegetable spray and pour some crayons into each spot. The more or less you put depends on what size you want for each chunky crayon. You can also group the crayons into colors that are fun together, red and blue for purple, pink tones for girls, or blue tones for boys.

Place the muffin tin full of crayons into a preheated oven of 275 degrees F. I used both mini muffin tins and large muffin tins. Watch them carefully, they will melt fast. Bake them for about 7-8 minutes. When they looked melted enough, carefully and slowly remove them from the oven. You can stir them with a toothpick for a swirly look, or leave them as is. Let them cool completely (can be placed in the freezer to speed up process once the tin is not so hot.)

Once cooled, the crayons can be popped out of the muffin tin, tap the back to help this process. Then get the paper out and your ready to color.

Baby Shower Trends

More and more people are turning to florists for event planning and baby showers are certainly no exception. In fact, in the past five years baby showers have become one of the most popular events for the Hidden Garden, behind weddings and Hollywood events. Perhaps it’s because more women are choosing to marry and have children a little older these days. Being a bit older and established means we can be more extravagant with budget and décor. The trends are smaller guest lists, modern and funky venues and nice details.

I have always believed that the floral design sets the tone for your décor, which is something that surprises many clients. Once a color palette is chosen, I incorporate floral to carry the theme throughout the entire event. Baby showers are no longer an afternoon at someone’s home. Today’s showers are at beautiful venues such as hotel gardens, restaurant banquet rooms, museums and tea houses. They are actual ‘events.’

Overall décor is top priority so we design full table top presentations complete with centerpieces, napkin accents and place cards. Favors have become more sophisticated too. Some centerpieces are comprised of many pieces which can be given to the guests at the table to take home.

Entertainment has replaced games. Palm readers, masseuses, and henna tattoo artists are very popular at the new, non-traditional shower. And when it comes to gifts, there is no need to guess. These moms-to-be have taken the time register and it is customary to stick to the registry. With the new showers feeling more like a girls’ night out, it’s no wonder we are now seeing more and more repeat showers. Don’t be surprised to receive a beautifully crafted invitation for babies number two and three!

Themed baby showers is our topic for April and this week we are featuring a Saddles & Rattles baby shower. Tell your guest to dress western and offer a western bbq for lunch or dinner.

This would be a great theme shower to do with couples.

Here are some great entertaining and decor ideas to keep the theme of your Rattles & Saddles Shower:

-Serve chips & snacks in cowboy hats.

-Use mason jars to serve your favorite beverage.

-Use bandanna style table cloths.

-Use a silver pen and write guest names on horseshoes for place cards.

-Fill cowboy boots with flowers to create centerpieces on your tables.

-Use galvanized horse troughs and fill with ice to place your beverages in.

With today being Earth Day, we wanted to share some of our favorite products with you that we have found. Starting with gdiapers. gDiapers consist of a washable, cotton outer pant and a plastic free flushable refill. They are made of breathable material just like sports clothing. We just came across this neat contraption. It is called the Fropper by International Playthings. It is for children 18 months+. The two level seat has a spring system that allows your little one to bounce as he strolls down the sidewalk. It also folds to a fraction of its size, which makes it great for storing.

Where was this when we were kids? This looks like a lot of fun. It retails for $69 and you can find it here.

With summer on the horizon this would be a blast for your little one. Not only does it sound cool, it looks cool too! So, get to Froppin'!!
